Privacy

We don't want to use apps that track or hold unnecessary information about us, and we won't inflict that on you. The documents you create and edit using the MarkupEditor are yours, and neither we nor any of the services we use to deliver the MarkupEditor to you have access to them.

We use analytics on the web site as a means to improve it.

Downloads and Subscriptions

The Evaluation Version of the MarkupEditor is publicly available from the repository and web site. The Evaluation Version uses a build-time setting to trigger enforcement of the evaluation period that the Unlimited Version does not have. Evaluation Version downloads are not tracked. To gain access to the Unlimited Version, you need to sign up for an account using an email address. Your email address, whether you are a subscriber, and when your account was last active are the only information we have about you. You can cancel your subscription at any time from your account page - this stops future billing, but you keep a free account. To delete your account and data entirely, email support@markupeditor.app, so we can remove your member record and cancel any active subscription.

The Unlimited Version of the MarkupEditor does not enforce a license key restriction. When you subscribe and download the Unlimited Version of the MarkupEditor, you can install it where you want and use it for as long as it works for you. If you connect your account in the app’s settings, the app checks your subscription with markupeditor.app so it can offer you updates. If your subscription ends, the app keeps working; it just stops receiving updates.

Subscription payments are processed using Stripe. Stripe retains billing records independently, as required for financial record-keeping. See Stripe's documentation for additional privacy-related information.

Network Access

The MarkupEditor app does not require network access. The editor allows you to insert images identified using a URL that is only accessible across the network. GeoJSON maps load their map tiles from OpenStreetMap. The plugin catalog (available from app settings) attempts to retrieve the up-to-date catalog from the GitHub repository when you open it, and downloads the plugins you choose to install.

If you connect your markupeditor.app account in the app’s settings, the app signs in with a code sent to your email address. After that, it contacts markupeditor.app when it starts, to confirm your subscription, and periodically, to check for updates. For these requests it sends the sign-in session it keeps on your Mac, along with the app’s name and version. The site redirects update downloads to its file storage (storage.ghost.io), which receives no sign-in session. Checking for updates counts as account activity, the same as visiting the web site. Disconnecting signs the app out and stops these requests.

Plugins

Plugins are a very powerful extension mechanism in the MarkupEditor. Plugins are JavaScript modules that may also introduce dependencies on third-party code. We use our own plugins to support Mermaid diagrams and GeoJSON maps. Plugins are the basis for DocX export.

We expect to continue to expand the catalog of plugins, including ones developed in open source by the community. Plugins made available through the app itself are gated by the standard GitHub pull request process and our own code review. Review the README about plugins for more information about requirements for them and how we protect your privacy as it relates to them.
